I agree with you about different colors on the same parts ! If I remeber well, the longest masking I had to do was for this kit => [link] especially for the flowers on her sleeves, a real nightmare but in the final I'm pretty happy with the result !
And yep about shading you have to take care about the lights... I like both mecha and figures !
